Once upon a time….
It all started with a baby girl who couldn’t keep cow’s milk down. With the price of goat’s milk going up, mom decided to buy the goat instead of the milk. “Baby” came home in 1980, an alpine doe with a Massachusetts ear tag and two kids in tow. Forty-plus years and 6 children later, someone’s still in the milk room twice a day, every day of the year.
While we bred for show standards, our saanens and saanen/nubian crosses find their purpose in year-round milk production. Each year, some of our girls are chosen to ‘milk through’ and are not allowed to get pregnant. This allows us to be one of only a few local farms that will have milk all winter long.
Herd Management
We believe that a person’s care for animals is a reflection of their character and acceptance of God’s created order. (Proverbs 12:10 and Genesis 2:19) For this reason we seek to provide a quality of life, diet and identity for our animals that reflects our God given responsibilities.
We feed a small amount of soy-free grain, supplemented with fresh produce and foraged greens grown on the farm. Since milk is about 90% water, almost all of the water our goats consume is filtered.
For disease and parasite control, we practice rotational grazing daily (unless the weather’s bad). We use no pesticides or steroids and only use antibiotics when lifesaving measures are needed. Animals that have received antibiotics or dewormers are literally ‘red tagged’ to ensure their milk is not used durning their withdrawal time.
Customer Types
We have two types of customers. Please let us know your needs and we’ll do our best to meet them.
As Needed
Request milk as they need it, typically every 2-6 weeks. In winter, milk is not always available for these customers. Milk orders need to be requested by 3 pm the day before.
Weekly Customers
Commit to picking up milk every week on the same day. (Ex: 3 quarts every Tuesday). We plan our winter supply of milk to provide for these customer. The sign-up window for weekly customers is March-August. Brown eggs are available for weekly customers only.
